From Practice Nets to the Pitch: How to Prepare for Your First Cricket Match

September 4, 2026 · by Ajeet Singh

Moving from practice nets to a real competitive match is a big step for any young cricketer — and a little preparation goes a long way toward calming those first-match nerves.

Start with your gear the night before: pads, gloves, helmet, bat and whites all checked and packed, so match-day morning isn’t rushed or stressful.

Warm up properly before play — light jogging, dynamic stretches and a few throw-downs or shadow shots help both the body and mind switch into ‘match mode’ rather than walking out cold.

Mentally, it helps to focus on process rather than outcome: concentrate on watching the ball, playing each delivery on its merits, and executing the basics you’ve practised — rather than worrying about the scoreboard.

Communication with teammates and captains matters too, especially while fielding — calling for catches clearly, backing up throws, and staying switched on between deliveries.

After the match, a short honest review — what went well, what to work on — turns even a difficult first game into a valuable learning experience rather than just a result.

At Ajeet Singh Cricket Academy, we build regular match exposure into our training programs so players in Agra get comfortable with real match situations well before high-pressure tournaments.
