How to Select the Right Cricket Bat: A Beginner’s Buying Guide

Picking the right cricket bat makes a real difference to how quickly a beginner develops good technique — an ill-fitting bat can actually make basic shots harder to learn.
Size is the first thing to get right. Bats are sized by age and height rather than a single standard, so it’s worth checking a size chart (or asking a coach) rather than guessing.
Weight matters just as much as size. A bat that’s too heavy leads to late shots and poor technique as players try to compensate; too light, and there’s little benefit for power as they grow stronger. As a rule of thumb, beginners should choose the lightest bat that feels comfortable at their size.
Willow type affects both performance and price. Kashmir willow bats are more affordable and durable — a sensible choice for beginners — while English willow bats offer better performance but at a higher cost and are usually better suited to more advanced players.
Grip thickness is a smaller detail but affects comfort and bat control, especially for players with smaller hands.
Most importantly: try to have a coach check the bat before buying, if possible. At Ajeet Singh Cricket Academy in Agra, we regularly guide parents and players through equipment choices as part of our coaching programs, so new players start with the right gear from day one.
